Must practice in a HPSA or MUA for 3 years. Virginia DOH sponsors Conrad 30 applications. Virginia typically has some remaining slots. Eligible for both ARC (southwest Appalachian counties) and SCRC waivers — two alternative unlimited-slot pathways. Full unrestricted VA medical license required.
Application Tips
Virginia typically has remaining Conrad slots (not among the 19 states that fill all 30). Southwest Appalachian Virginia (Lee, Scott, Wise, Dickenson, Buchanan counties) has the highest HPSA scores and qualifies for ARC waivers. The Southside region (Danville, Martinsville) and Eastern Shore also have strong need. Parts of Virginia qualify for SCRC waivers too. Northern Virginia (NoVA) is extremely competitive — avoid for waiver purposes. Richmond and Hampton Roads have some FQHC opportunities. Virginia has a moderate state income tax (graduated 2-5.75%). Strong academic systems: UVA, VCU, EVMS for networking.
