About this program
The Visiting Medical Student Program at Wake Forest University School of Medicine (Winston-Salem, NC, with parallel rotations at Atrium Health Charlotte, NC via the Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist partnership) provides clinical electives for senior (M4) medical students. Eligibility: M4 students from US LCME-accredited OR AOA/COCA-accredited medical schools, OR international students from foreign medical schools (with significant fee differential — see below). All applicants must have completed M3 + passed USMLE Step 1 or COMLEX Level 1. Applications are submitted through the AAMC VSLO platform; AY 2026-27 visiting student catalog opens March 13, 2026 for both Winston-Salem and Charlotte locations. PRIORITY ORDER for rotation allocation: (1) Wake Forest's own students; (2) visiting domestic students; (3) visiting international students. Visiting rotations are NOT guaranteed even if accepted — rotations are subject to change based on availability. FEES: standard rates apply for US LCME/COCA applicants; international applicants face a $100 non-refundable application fee + $2,500 administrative fee per 4-week rotation. All visiting student fees and payments are non-refundable and non-transferable. Cancellation or withdrawal must be made at least 5 weeks before rotation start date — withdrawal is done in VSLO. External (undergraduate, high school) shadowing experiences are NOT accommodated. Visiting PA students apply via Wake Forest SOM's Comprehensive Learner Management Office (separate workflow). Visiting CRNA students flow through Contingent Workforce (separate workflow).

The Visiting Medical Student Program at Wake Forest University School of Medicine provides an enriching opportunity for the school, health system and the applicant. Prioritization is given to Wake Forest University School of Medicine students. Visiting medical students who request a rotation are not guaranteed a rotation and rotations are subject to change. To attend an elective rotation at the school of medicine, you must be actively pursuing a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree, be in good academic standing, have successfully completed your 3rd year, and successfully passed USMLE Step 1 or COMLEX Level 1. All applicants must apply in the AAMC VSLO platform where additional requirements are noted.
