Detroit Medical Center (DMC) Visiting Medical Student Policy serves visiting students at Wayne State University SOM's clinical campus in Detroit, MI. Critical structural note per P102: Wayne State SOM itself does NOT run observerships — the affiliated Detroit Medical Center administers the visiting-students program. Application categories per DMC: Base, Visiting, and Guest students. Two paths: (1) home school has active affiliation agreement with DMC — apply via DMC's own elective application sent to [email protected]; (2) no affiliation agreement — apply via AAMC VSLO (Visiting Student Learning Opportunities) platform. EXCLUSION: 'At this time we do not accept International Medical Students.' Applications must be submitted at MINIMUM 60 days before the requested start date — any received after the 60-day window will not be considered. Visiting students may complete a total of 2 rotations across DMC sites (availability-dependent). Cancellation/change deadline: 30 days pre-start; no exceptions. Failure to show up for a rotation is considered unprofessional behavior and DMC reserves the right to cancel all future rotations for that student. Special M4-only 4-week rotations: pediatric rotations, neurosurgery, trauma surgery, surgery intensive care, and PM&R. PM&R additionally requires a statement of interest indicating genuine intent toward the residency program. After approval: onboarding via New Innovations — must complete 31 days pre-start or rotation is cancelled. Affiliated sites: Sinai Grace Hospital, Harper/Hutzel Hospital, Detroit Receiving Hospital, Children's Hospital of Michigan, Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan.
