About this program
The UAB Heersink School of Medicine welcomes senior MD/DO students to its Visiting Student Program. Eligibility is strictly limited to US citizens or permanent residents attending an LCME-accredited (US allopathic) or AOA-accredited (osteopathic, COM) medical school. International students are NOT eligible through this pathway — UAB maintains a SEPARATE International Medical Observership/Visiting Medical Students pathway at uab.edu/medicine/international/international-programs/international-visiting-medical-students. Applications are accepted ONLY through the AAMC Visiting Students Learning Opportunities (VSLO) program. The elective catalog opens for browsing in mid-February; applications open in early March; offers are issued April 1. Most rotations are 4 weeks; Urology offers a 2-week option. Visiting electives are available in Surgery, Pediatrics, Emergency Medicine, Neurology, Urology, Obstetrics and Gynecology, and multiple Internal Medicine subspecialties. Rotations span 3 UAB regional campuses: Birmingham, Huntsville, and Tuscaloosa. A $150 non-refundable fee is required to secure a spot after offer.
