About this program

UCLA Health's International Physician Observership runs out of the David Geffen School of Medicine's international services office and places international physicians into clinical host departments for one to three months, with longer stays only when the host department approves. The program is fee-heavy: a $750 non-refundable application fee plus full self-funding for travel, housing, and living. UCLA's scope disclosures are unusually direct. Observers cannot participate in patient care, cannot advise on cases, have no access to UCLA's CareConnect EMR, no library or email credentials, and cannot participate in volunteer research. The whole program is shadowing only. Two statements on the page materially affect the Match-credibility classification: UCLA Health explicitly declines to provide any LOR regarding observer participation, and it states that participation 'has no bearing on pending or future residency or fellowship applications.' Entry requires a medical degree from an accredited school, English proficiency, and a B-1 visa; UCLA does not assist with visas. Applicants must first obtain acceptance from a host department, then complete the online application. UCLA does issue a Certificate of Participation. Because the program explicitly refuses LORs and disclaims residency value, it is classified as Specialty Visiting / Tier C regardless of UCLA's prestige.
