About this program

The Harrington Global Observership is operated by the International Medicine Institute at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. Since its launch in 2008, the program has hosted more than 850 observers, primarily from Europe and Asia, who come to observe day-to-day activity of a specific UM department, division, center, or institute. Rotations run from one to three months, giving international students and physicians a longer horizon than many US observerships. The scope is intentionally observational rather than participatory. The program does not publicly disclose fees, USMLE or ECFMG requirements, visa sponsorship status, letter-of-recommendation practices, or certificate issuance; interested applicants are directed to contact the Institute directly. Because the program accepts both foreign medical students and practicing foreign physicians, it functions as a flexible observership for candidates exploring US academic medicine. Prospective applicants should expect a moderate lead time and should request detailed written confirmation of whether a rotation LOR or attendance document will be provided before investing in travel.
