About this program

Penn Radiology runs an umbrella Visiting Observers Program that lets international medical students, foreign-trained radiologists, and post-graduate physicians shadow inside individual subspecialty sections at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. The program frames itself as an enrichment experience for the visitor — observers cannot replace departmental staffing, cannot touch patients, and are not awarded academic credit. The participating divisions include Abdominal Imaging, Breast Imaging, Cardiovascular Imaging, Thoracic Imaging, Musculoskeletal, Neuroradiology, and Nuclear Medicine, and each keeps its own coordinator who decides whether to accept a given applicant. Applications go directly to the division of interest using the Penn Visiting Observership Application. Immigration status is handled by Penn Medicine itself: approved observers enter on a J-1 exchange visitor visa (processing can take six to nine months) or, for stays under three months, a B-1 business visitor visa. Before the rotation begins, observers must document medical coverage of at least $50,000 per incident, current MMR and varicella immunizations, a negative PPD within three months, and — for September through March arrivals — a flu shot.
