About this program
UW Madison's Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine offers a four-week in-person observership in summer, with two fixed 2026 blocks: May 26 through June 19, and July 6 through 31. The program is open only to external medical school graduates — meaning not for current residents elsewhere — and targets physicians preparing for a career in pathology. Observers rotate through surgical pathology, autopsy service, transfusion medicine, and the clinical pathology core, sitting with attendings and residents during sign-out. The program is explicit that it does not offer a remote or virtual observership. Applications are submitted through a Google Form and must include a CV; if USMLE Step scores are available, the department asks applicants to include them, but scores are not strictly mandatory. The deadline is March 1 of the intended academic year, and notifications are issued by March 20.
