About this program

Johns Hopkins School of Medicine hosts visiting 4th-year medical students for four-week clinical electives and 4-9 week research electives across its departments at The Johns Hopkins Hospital and affiliated sites. Applications are submitted through Hopkins' Slate portal (not the AAMC VSLO platform) and applicants can file up to three applications per cycle. Visiting student placements occur after JHUSOM students are scheduled, so priority is space-dependent and decisions take 30-60 days. The research elective fee is rising from $500 to $750 for rotations starting Fall 2026. Applicants are expected to have completed core clerkships and to be enrolled at a medical school with an executed affiliation agreement with Hopkins. The clinical elective portfolio covers medicine, surgery, pediatrics, OB/GYN, psychiatry, neurology, and many subspecialties. The program is demanding and residency-adjacent: departments treat the rotation as both an academic experience and an unofficial audition.
